Focus group development and facilitation

Children and Families Commission of Orange, Kidbuilders Project, 2003                                                                                                                      Six focus groups (3 in Spanish; 3 in English) conducted with parents that currently have their children enrolled in daycare.  Focus groups conducted in formal, informal and home-based day care centers and with working and stay-at-home parents.  Goal was to gain insight and feedback on parenting expectations and on the content material in the Kidbuilders Activity Book in the following:

  • Nutrition
  • Health and Safety
  • Mind Builders
  • Whether the KIDBUILDER workbook format is appropriate or useful for parents
  • Views on the use of incentives for either a parent and/or a child to increase participation in the proposed activities
  • Level of awareness of developmentally appropriate and stimulating activities

Aids Services Foundation of Orange County, 2002                                     Focus groups were conducted as part of a program evaluation of a 3 year pilot study funded by the California Endowment. Funding included the clients’ motivations for adherence and/or barriers, specific to male and female Latinos; African Americans and white gay males, and an articulation of cultural and gender differences, in adherence to medication compliance. Developed and facilitated four focus groups consisting of 10-15 HIV/AIDS clients from the following client populations:

  • Woman of Color, English Speaking;  
  • White Gay Males;
  • Non-white Men who have sex with men, English Speaking and;  
  • HIV Positive Spanish speaking males and females

  • Incarcerated Male Teen Gang Member
  • Homeless children (Anaheim Motel)

Population Based random Digital Dial Telephone Survey's

Orange County Health Needs Assessment, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007     Reports available on the web at: www.ochna.org

  • Random Digital Dial (rdd) telephone survey of 5,000 Orange County households

Survey development & data collection, data analysis, report production and community event for release of results

  • Community Focus groups of select populations (e.g.: Seniors, Teen Mothers, Hispanic and Asian populations; homeless teens, male teens associated with gang membership and in custody of OC Probation dept.
  • Incorporation of local, State and Federal health data into full data report, including GIS maps
  • Production of a Community Data report that includes complete analysis with statistical significance test (P-values and Chi-squares)

Tobacco Utilization Prevention Program (TUPP) 2004, 2005

  • Conducted and managed pre and post test telephone surveys of select Orange County cities. There were 1,200 completed interviews done in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean languages.  The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of several types of intervention campaigns aimed at increasing the awareness of the dangers of smoking, increase the number of people who are willing to stop smoking and over time lower the smoking rates.

Hoag Hospital – City of Irvine Community Health Needs Assessment (2010)

  • OCHNA is in the process of conducting a health needs assessment of the City of Irvine
  • CSUF will launch a survey wherein OCHNA will use SPSS to analyze the data
  • The goal is to gain cultural and linguistic insight to better assess the community’s needs and access to health care services

CalOptima – Linguistic and Cultural Needs Assessment (2007)              Target population: Healthy Families clients

  • Telephone survey conducted in Spanish, English and Vietnamese Languages

Oasis Senior Center, City of Newport Beach, 2006

  • Development of a paper/pencil survey tool designed for older adults regarding their social and recreational needs; health status and future interest.
  • Develop electronic, web-based survey designed for key informants and local city leaders regarding their views on the needs of their senior population.
  • Report analysis to be used as a basis for upgrading the current building facilities and to reposition the Center to better serve the needs and interests of both the current and future participants.
